A Mississauga-based individual artist, community advocate, and researcher, Dr. Feihong Nan has spent over 10 years sharing the Chinese Canadian experience in GTA and engaging the community in the celebration of GTA’s diverse music and cultural heritage.

Born in Mainland China, Feihong learned her most important lesson at the feet of her parents, who taught her the importance and rewards of community work, especially with their mission of connecting people through music, protecting intangible heritage and promoting the multicultural programs.

As an adult, following her PhD education at McMaster University. Feihong chose to devote herself to projects that carry on her parents’ legacy and founded Canadian Division of Yuan Yin Group. Yuan Yin means the voice from the heart and the voice from nature. History of Yuan Yin starts in 1920 with the effort of a team of scholars and professors from the China's top universities and officers from the provincial government.

As the founder of the Canadian division of Yuan Yin Group, Feihong has over 25 years of professional experience playing and teaching GuZheng (Chinese zither) and Qin (UNESCO Intangible Heritage). She currently holds the highest grade certificate in Guzheng music performance and teaching, she is also the national 1st place winner in GuZheng performance. Feihong is committed to share her belief and passion for music with the audience and students. She has been leading over 300 performers and volunteers on annual base in an effort to accelerate impact of music collaborations and diverse cultural heritage, which includes:

  • Feihong's performance attracts a stellar cast of Canadian musicians and she was invited to record Guzheng (Chinese Zither) and Qin (ancient seven string zither) music for the Album of ''Asia Beauty" (composed and produced by Ron Korb), which is on 2016 Grammy Nominations for Best New Age Album! The album also garnered several awards including: The Global Music Awards, 2015, International Acoustic Music Awards 2016, Nominations for World/Global Fusion Album 2016 and Nomination for Best World Album 2016
  • Feihong organized annual fund-raising concert featuring Qin, a UNESCO Intangible Heritage and GuZheng (Chinese classical music with a 3000-year tradition). Also, she brought the musicians and students in GTA together on the stage in Living Arts Centre, to combine the flavour and texture of Eastern music and the orchestral colour and sensitive lyrics of western culture. Every year, the concert is full house and all the net proceeds have been donated to Hospital for Sick Children and The SickKids Foundation.
