Brief Program Description

This is an advanced program designed to prepare plucked instrument players for professional performing careers through private instruction and intensive solo and ensemble performance experiences. A minimum residency of 8 courses (240 hours each) is required.

Admission Requirements

Language proficiency (Chinese) must meet at least one of the following three items:

  • Complete 3 or more consecutive years of full time education (high school or above) in a country where Chinese is the principal language (e.g. China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan China).
  • Pass a level 3 HSK Chinese test. (info for HSK Chinese Test, www.chinesetest.cn)
  • Pass the entrance Chinese language test administered by Canada YC Music Academy, the passing mark is set at 75 out of a full score of 100

Audition

  • An audition is mandatory for all applicants, and is the determining step of the admission of an applicant.
  • Applicants who are unable to attend a live audition may submit YouTube or Youku recordings.
  • Applicants should choose from these options
  1. One piece of traditional Chinese music,
  2. One piece of contemporary music 
  • The audition repertoire outlined represents minimal requirements; works of greater difficulty may be substituted in any category.


Learning Objectives

By the end of this program, students will be able to

1. Perform at the level of an advanced student, young professional or higher; demonstrating competence in technical aspects of performance, i.e., tone quality, articulation, pitch consistency, dynamic control, technical agility, and accurate rhythmic concepts.

2. Possess a strong mastery of the technique and musicianship necessary to perform as both soloists and within an ensemble at an advanced, pre-professional level.

3. Demonstrate increasing competence in knowledge of the orchestral repertoire, and as an ensemble performer through participation in orchestras and ensembles.

4. Demonstrate growing maturity in musical concepts

5. Plan and perform a graduate recital from all styles, and provide well-written program notes; collaborate with an accompanist or other musicians.

6. Acquire sufficient understanding of musical forms, processes, and structures to use this knowledge in compositional, performance, scholarly, and pedagogical contexts, as appropriate to their specialization and degree program.

7. Work independently and with peers through unsupervised rehearsals.

8. Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, maturity, and respect for themselves and fellow colleagues.

Methods of Evaluation

Students will be evaluated based on each courses.

Students are required to hold four (4) full-length recitals that include 60-minutes of music throughout the study of the program. The first recital should be at the end of Plucked Instruments 102, the second recital should be at the end of Plucked instruments 202,the third recital should be at the end of Plucked instruments 302, and the last recital should be at the end of Plucked instruments 402  (also known as the graduation recital). Repertoire for the recital must be approved by the applied music teacher. The recital will be adjudicated by the applied music teacher and one other juror. Completion Requirements

Students must achieve a minimum average of 70 in all of the courses and the two recitals. Students must pass the recitals at the end of Plucked instruments 102, 202, 302 and 402 to be deemed completion of the program. Prior to holding the graduation recital, students must have no outstanding payments (e.g. tuition).


Students are expected to finish all requirements in the minimum of four years, and the maximum time allotted for completion is normally five consecutive years from initial enrollment and may be subject to new requirements, including course upgrades, additional tuition, and administration fees.

Required course materials


Students should have their own plucked instruments. Plucked instruments will be provided by the academy during lecture. Required textbooks and printer notes will be provided by the academy for free.
